Psychotherapy Treatment for Schizophrenia

Psychotherapy is a direct psychological intervention, which aims to provide emotional support to the person with Schizophrenia. This treatment allows the person to establish a trusting relationship with his therapist, doctor, or mental health professional. This restores his self-esteem and self-confidence, the two important traits he seemed to have lost during his illness. Consequently, the person talks about the difficult circumstances in his life, which have not only stressed him but have caused his breakdown, and starts to manage them.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation for Schizophrenia

This intervention is equally important as medications or psychotherapy in the treatment of persons with Schizophrenia. This includes many activities aimed at making the person know throughout the illness that not only is his recovery dependent on his compliance to treatment with medications and supportive psychotherapy, but also involves the environment  around him. This environment includes his family, neighbors, and co-workers if he has a job or co-students if he is in school.

Some of the identified psychosocial rehabilitation programs include:

1. Psychoeducation for families
-     to help families know about the illness and manage the illness including how to maintain recovery of the person suffering from Schizophrenia and preventing relapse.
2. Social interaction program
-     to help the person:
o   enhance friendships and relationships with others
o   learn how to keep stress at a comfortable level
   o   communicate thoughts more easily
o   find activities that he/she may enjoy in his/her free time
3. Occupational rehabilitation
-     to assist the person living with Schizophrenia in learning the skills needed to be successful in the living, working, and learning environments of his/her choice.
4. Support groups
-     to work with and learn from others who have similar problems; to give and receive support from others.
5. Community resources
-     to help patients and family find community activities and resources that may be helpful.

All people suffering from Schizophrenia need understanding and support to help them towards better recovery. Family members and caregivers play a very crucial role in the recovery of persons with Schizophrenia.
